Repetitive stress injury is the name given to a group of conditions caused when too much stress is placed on one area of the body. This type of work injury occurs when the same action is performed over and over, day after day. Over time, this can cause pain and swelling in the muscles and tendons.

One example of a repetitive stress injury is carpal tunnel syndrome. This is caused by the compression of the median nerve and tendons that flex your fingers, resulting in pain, weakness and numbness in the hand and wrist.

Another is tendonitis, when tendons (tissue connecting muscle to bone) become inflamed, resulting in pain and swelling. Tendonitis typically occurs in the hands and wrists but can occur anywhere in the body.

Tasks that can lead to a repetitive stress injury over time include:

  • Typing
  • Using a cash register
  • Pushing, slicing or pressing down during food preparation
  • Lifting
  • Stocking
  • Packing boxes
  • Sewing
  • Using hand tools, such as a saw or hammer
  • Operating pneumatic tools, such as a jackhammer or sander

Performing these types of repetitive tasks as part of your job is considered an occupational exposure under the New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Act. When these tasks result in injury, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. These include medical treatment for the injury, as well wage benefits if you cannot work for some time.

Insurance companies for employers often try to pay as little as possible to injured workers. That’s why you need an experienced workers’ compensation attorney to represent you when filing a claim. We build a strong case for benefits and fight any denials or delays related to medical treatment.

Some of our attorneys are board-certified by the New Jersey Supreme Court in the area of workers’ compensation law. Others are former defense attorneys who know the tricks insurance companies use to minimize your benefits. You will be represented by one attorney. But thanks to our team litigation approach, you benefit from the combined experience of all our attorneys.
